Additional info: The A-Spire Players’ is a voluntary, non-profit organization which exists to provide opportunities for the production and presentation of performing arts and provide for the development of its members.

For over 10 years, the Summer Theatre Season has been known for hosting theatre groups from all over Manitoba and providing a unique opportunity to see some original productions on stage for the first time ever. During the seasons, A-Spire Players has also hosted musical performances, improv & stand up comedy, readings and a variety other performing arts.

A-Spire Players’ operates from the Gimli Unitarian Church otherwise known as the Aspire Theatre. Although the interior of the church has been tailored to include a stage, backstage, lighting, sound and theatre seating for eighty, the building has been designated as a Municipal Heritage Site and continues to be used by the Unitarian Church for services on Sunday mornings during the summers.

One of Canada’s Premiere film festivals, Gimli Film Festival, was the brain child of Icelandic/Canadian filmmaker Jon Gustafsson when he wanted to show his locally shot feature film Kanadiana to the people of Gimli. The opening night film at the first festival was Tales From the Gimli Hospital by Guy Maddin. Other founding members were Senator Janis Johnson, and filmmakers Caelum Vatnsdal and Matt Holm.

Icelandic Festival of Manitoba, Islendingadagurinn, is held on the long weekend in August. The first Icelandic festival in Manitoba was held in Winnipeg in 1890; it was held there annually until 1931, and since 1932 has been held in Gimli.

Gimli’s Theatre (located in the Unitarian Church dating back to 1905) hosts an active theatre group with performances year round.
